English 9 (English 201):
Grade Level: 9th Grade
Prerequisites: none
Credit: 1 credit, one full year
English 9 serves as a base for other English classes students will take during their high school years. Primary emphasis will be placed on literature, grammar, and composition. The production of a term paper is a requirement.
Honors English 9 (English 204):
Grade Level: 9th Grade
Prerequisites: high placement test scores and endorsement of 8th grade English teacher with full concurrence of the parent.
Credit: 1 credit, one full year
English 204 is a class designed to combine the content of both English 9 and English 10 for the verbally advanced student. This honors class will emphasize reading, writing, and grammar proficiency in a setting that focuses on daily group and individual participation. A rigorous schedule of work in and outside of class is an expectation of the class. These skills should prepare the student for the junior/senior level electives that follow this course.
English 10 (English 202):
Grade Level: 10th Grade
Prerequisites: English 9
Credit: 1 credit, one full year
This course will focus on developing writing skills including vocabulary, grammar usage and composition. Also, students will examine various literary works spanning several different genres of literature. The students will produce a research paper.
Honors English 10 (English 208):
Grade Level: 10th Grade
Prerequisites: Honors English 9 (204)
Credit: 1 credit, one full year
Honors English 10 is an in depth study of major works of literature and authors. This honors class is designed to prepare students for the AP English classes that will be taught Junior and Senior Year. A rigorous schedule of work in and out of class is challenging and expected. Extensive reading, note taking, and composition are required. The course is supplemented by novels and plays. A thesis research paper is required.
Novels/Dual Credit Novels (English 220, 221, 222, 223):
Grade Level: 10th (if student has taken Honors English), 11th-12th Grades
Prerequisites: English 201 and 202 or English 204
Credit: 1 credit, two semesters
Novels class is a semester long class offered to juniors and seniors. Generally, the class covers four classic novels in class and students read two books outside of class. Basic elements of each novel (plot, characterization, theme, setting, symbols) are covered in depth. Students participate in class discussion and do research on the time period of the books’ settings. Dual credit class participants receive graduation credit as well as college credit from Lincoln Land. Testing is primarily in essay format. Students may take more than one semester for graduation credit.
Elements of Writing (English 213):
Grade Level: 12th Grade
Prerequisites: English 201 and 202 or English 204
Credit: 1/2 credit, one semester
Elements of Writing is a semester long honors class for seniors that prepares the students for college writing. The class covers various types of essays and the basic format of each. In addition, students write a documented MLA research paper and gain practice in APA documentation also. Grammar and punctuation review is regularly practiced also.
Applied English and Publication Design (English 235):
Grade Level: 11th-12th Grade
Prerequisites: Apply to instructor
Credit: 1/2 credit, one full year
This class is responsible for the production of the school yearbook and the school newspaper. Students will gain experience in scheduling, copy layout, copy writing, photojournalism, proof reading, and meeting scheduled deadlines. Students will develop writing skills for different journalism media intermingled with yearbook production.
Speech and Drama (English 231):
Grade Level: 11th and 12th Grade
Prerequisites: English 201 and 202 or English 204
Credit: 1/2 credit, one semester
Basic verbal communication skills are developed, ranging from readings, through interview and verbal presentation techniques, to formal speech presentations and dramatic portrayals.
World Literature (English 226):
Grade Level: 11th and 12th Grade
Prerequisites: English 201 and 202 or English 204
Credit: 1/2 credit, one semester
This English course for junior/senior level students will study the plays and novels written in other languages and translated into English. One quarter will focus on world novels and the other quarter will focus on world plays. Students will also explore fables and/or folktales as well as foreign films through quarterly projects. Exploration of cultural influence on the literature will be a strong focus of the class.
American Literature (English 227):
Grade Level: 11th and 12th Grade
Prerequisites: English 201 and 202 or English 204
Credit: 1/2 credit, one semester
This English course for junior/senior level students surveys American Literature through three thematic units. Included in each unit, students will read poetry, short stories, non-fiction selections, a novel or a play written by authors born in the United States. The influence of American culture and values will be emphasized. Units will include A Sense of Place, The Individual, and The American Dream.
Film as Literature I (English 241):
Grade Level: 11th and 12th Grade
Prerequisites: English 201 and 202 or English 204
Credit: 1/2 credit, one semester
This course is an elective in English for the junior or senior student. In this semester, the student will use motion pictures to examine the elements of film: story, visual elements, sound elements, acting, and direction. The course will include writing, speech, group work, and creative arts projects.
British Literature I:
Grade Level: 11th and 12th Grade
Prerequisites: English 201 and 202 or English 204
Credit: 1/2 credit, one semester
British literature is a one-year, two semester course, designed as an English elective for the junior or senior year. It is suggested that the student take both semesters but they may be taken independently. The primary resource material will be: Prentice Hall Literature: The British Tradition. Three units will be covered in the first semester, including the Anglo-Saxon Era, the Middle Ages, and the Renaissance. Focus will be placed on language development and historical influence. Literary analysis papers will be assigned for each semester in lieu of a semester exam. Information concerning the paper will be given at a later date.
British Literature II:
Grade Level: 11th and 12th Grade
Prerequisites: English 201 and 202 or English 204
Credit: 1/2 credit, one semester
This one semester junior-senior English elective will approach the post-Renaissance study of British authors through a survey of four genres: poetry, novel, short story, and drama. Long works to be studied will include 1984, Pygmalion, and The Importance of Being Earnest. A literary analysis paper will be assigned in lieu of a comprehensive final exam. Information regarding the subject and format of this paper will be given at a later date. Strong focus will be placed on verbal participation, group work, and literary analysis. The primary source for students will be the textbook: Prentice Hall Literature: The British Tradition, published in 2007.
