Religion 9 - Old Testament and Life of Christ Survey:

Grade Level: 9th Grade

Prerequisites: None

Credit: 1 credit, one full year

What we are and what we do as a body of believers is part of an ancient community that existed even long before the New Testament. The students will see how the Old Testament community expressed their trust in God and how particular Old Testament characters responded to God and expressed their faith (or lack of it). The life and ministry of Jesus is examined by a study of the Gospel of Matthew.


 
Comparative Religions

Grade Level: 10th-11th Grades

Prerequisites: Religion 9

Credit: 1 credit, one full year

This course defines what it means to be a Christian and establishes five standards (plumblines) for comparing religions with Christianity. The course focuses on Christian denominations, world religions, and non-Christian groups, to understand what they teach, to evaluate and compare them with orthodox Christianity, and to learn more about one’s own beliefs. This will also enable the student to witness to members of other faiths more effectively. (1 Peter 3:15) The course is offered during academic years beginning with an even-numbered year.


 
Church History and New Testament Epistles

Grade Level: 10th-11th Grades

Prerequisites: Religion 9

Credit: 1 credit, one full year

This course traces the history of the Christian Church from its roots in the Old Testament through the time of the Reformation. The first semester shows the growth of the Church until the time of Diocletian and Constantine. The second semester shows the abuses and diversity in doctrine and practices within Christianity, and their relationship to today’s churches. The students will also study the Book of Acts and several New Testament Epistles. The course is offered during academic years beginning with an odd-numbered year.


 

Christian Faith 

Grade Level: 12th Grade

Prerequisites: Religion 10/11

Credit: 1 credit, one full year

Christian church beliefs are examined, with emphasis on the Lutheran Church positions, while studying contemporary issues, writings and life styles in the light of God’s Word.


  

Advanced Issues of the Christian Faith

Grade Level: 12th Grade

Prerequisites: Permission of Instructor

Credit: 1 credit, one full year

Units covered in this course will focus on evidence for the Christian faith, a variety of contemporary issues, and topics/challenges that high school and college students encounter. An emphasis of the course is for students to learn to give a defense for Christian beliefs and practices. Some units during 2nd Semester will be determined by student interest.
